On July 16, 2024, a new sculpture titled The Thinker was unveiled near the Zuzeum Art Centre in Riga, Latvia. The piece, created by Aigars Bikše, challenges traditional ideas of masculinity and invites reflection on self-awareness and identity.

For over a century, conversations about identity have largely centered on women—addressing their autonomy, their understanding of their bodies, and their evolving societal roles. While much progress has been made in this area, quieter discussions have emerged around the implications for men. Men, too, are reevaluating their sense of self and sexuality, seeking new frameworks for expression.

Rodin's iconic 19th-century sculpture, The Thinker, symbolizes physical strength and power, captured in a muscular, motionless form. In contrast, Bikše’s interpretation portrays a figure that blooms like a flower, embodying inner strength and self-awareness. This modern take reflects a shift away from rigid notions of masculinity toward more authentic and introspective relationships with oneself and others.

Situated prominently on the grounds of Zuzeum, Bikše’s The Thinker is a bold addition to Riga's cultural landscape. Its placement allows residents and visitors to encounter contemporary art in an accessible, thought-provoking manner. “We believe art should be open to all,” said Janis Zuzans, representing Zuzeum’s mission of removing barriers to cultural engagement. By showcasing this remarkable work from one of Latvia’s leading artists, the center hopes to inspire deeper appreciation and dialogue around creativity and personal identity.
