Medics to the World

Tuesday, June 16th, a six-meter-tall statue was unveiled near the Latvian National Museum of Art in dedication to the medical staff around the world. Medics To The World is artist's response to the recent global events and their impact locally.

During a pandemic, the role of doctors in society is particularly pronounced. It is their direct task to save lives whilst being in close contact with the disease, thus being subjected to danger. The ability to care for others is a selfless activity that requires a healthy exchange in response. This is the time for other members of society to step in, to support.

Aigars Bikše talks on exchange: “Doctors take care of us. I think the artist has to do something for them. It’s not what doctors deserve, but a small fraction of it."

Society as a system cannot function without exchange, be it barters, money exchange or the gift economy. There must also be an exchange between individuals - not merely material, but an exchange of attention, respect and resources.

Working in the classical sculpture medium, Aigars seeks for ways and forms with which the traditional language of sculpture can operate and speak in modern society. Doctor’s depiction may be a moment of rest between long working hours where the doctor shortly recovers before returning back to the ward.

The posture of outstretched arms has long been a testament to being unarmed. A combination of art, ritual and sacred in this iconographic position signals the meaning and attitude of the figure. Simultaneously it references the ancient statues – both in terms of size and posture.

This project is the result of the support of several stakeholders - almost all of the addressed supporters were ready to get involved. Such a response at this difficult time suggests a kind of unity. "The situation is such that you feel - when there is a common thing to address and stand for, it will be done! A good and pleasant sign for me and for society. ”
