Historical memories of the present /2025/
Artist Aigars Bikše comments about the created work of art: “The image of an animal as a structure and totem. This exhibition explores images that are very ancient and define the foundations of human understanding. At the same time, the author wants to confront these totemic archetypes with modern human understanding of social experience and modern human confusion and doubts about the future. The exhibition is an attempt to look at humans both as ancient programmed biological machines and, at the same time, to reveal the infinite inner spiritual space that is accessible to every human being.”
From 9 October to 9 November this year, Aigars Bikše’s solo exhibition “Historical memories of the present” is on display at Art gallery DAUGAVA in Ausekļa iela 1, Rīga, Latvia. The works created for the exhibition were made between 2020 and October 2025 and are made of oak wood, bronze and stainless steel.
The exhibition "Historical Memories of the Present" features five sculptures which together form a whole that characterizes modern man's relationship with ancient archetypes, as explained by their author, Aigars Bikše. They make us think about a person who is trying to understand the ancient beast that dwells within him and society, and its relationship with the cultural being created by humanity.
Living in today's world, artists have access to many means of expression and different ways of talking about what is important. The works on display in the exhibition are created using various principles of form, which, in the context of the exhibition, create a common interplay, with the entire exhibition becoming a single sculpture. By placing the sculpture "The Emergence of Red Particles" within the sculpture "Taming the Beast with the Heart," the author emphasizes the relationship between space and the volume of the sculpture and the physical interaction with the viewer's own body. The materiality, volume, and smell of tar of the sculptures are important aspects of the physical experience available to the viewer and elements that make up the exhibition, which, when enjoyed, stimulate several senses.
